House of Hew

On my last couple of trips up to the Sunshine Coast I've enjoyed some great frozen yoghurt at House of Hew at Mooloolaba. Every now and again when I can't handle the sweetness of say Royal Copenhagen, Baskin Robbins or a gelati (which isn't very often), I find frozen yoghurt fits the bill perfectly.

House of Hew serves organic frozen yoghurt, which comes in assorted fruity flavours. The last few times I've tried the churned option, where natural yoghurt is mixed up with strawberries, blueberries, mango, mixed berries, cherries, pineapple, blackberries or raspberries. On the weekend I had a blackberry yoghurt in a tub ($4 for a single) - not only did it taste lovely and tangy, but the yoghurt was the most amazing bright purple colour from the blackberries.

If a tub of fruity frozen yoghurt isn't your thing, try out one of their smoothies instead. I'm sure they will taste just as good.

Browns of Mooloolaba

I always love coming across new places that sell fresh seafood. Browns of Mooloolaba sell seafood that is about as fresh as you'll ever get. Their prawns, crabs and bugs are locally caught, which means they come straight off the boat to you.

I was lucky enough to have a feast of fresh prawns and Balmain bugs today for lunch, which were delicious. The best thing about really fresh prawns is that you just can't stop eating them. Luckily we only bought a kilo, so we had to stop eating eventually.

Browns of Mooloolaba also sell oysters, fish fillets and a variety of gourmet foods from the Spirit House, Tetsuya, Maggie Beer and Simon Johnson.

Noosa Food Weekend

The not so catchily named Settler's Cove Celebration of Australian Food & Wine - Noosa Style is happening this weekend at Noosa (surprise).

If you've got nothing to do this weekend, or you're going to be anywhere near Noosa, it's well worth checking out. There is so much on over the weekend, I won't even try to cover it all - have a look at the website. The lineup is pretty impressive, including Meyjitte Boughenout, Frank Camorra, George Calombaris, Serge Dansereau, Stephen and Prue Henschke, Huon Hooke, Philip Johnson, Matthew Kemp, Rick Kinzbrunner, Cheong Liew, Kym Machin, Andrew McConnell, Matt Moran, Neil Perry, David Pugh and Steve Webber.

There are some awesome sounding dinners at local restaurants happening on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, including The Press Club cooking at Season ($85), Restaurant Balzac cooking at Alegria ($85) and Icebergs & Rockpool (fish) cooking at Wasabi ($100). Hopefully there are still some tickets left.

Sounds like a pretty fine way to spend the weekend if you ask me.

Mooloolaba Fish Market

The Mooloolaba Fish Market is my favourite place to buy seafood (fresh or cooked) in the Mooloolaba/Maroochydore area.

It's a fantastic place to buy just about any fresh seafood - whole fish, fish fillets, prawns, bugs, crabs, scallops, oysters etc. And they also have a great range of cooked seafood, if you are just after some fish and chips. Sit on the deck upstairs, overlooking the trawlers and munch away on some of the freshest, tastiest seafood on the Sunshine Coast.

On my most recent trip we picked up a dozen oysters, half a kilo of fresh green headless prawns and a sand crab for $34. Great value, and even better once we started eating it. The sand crab in particular was beautifully sweet. Although I felt terribly lazy, its also great to be able to get headless green prawns, which saves about 5 seconds in peeling after they've been cooked up (not to mention the scraps).

Best of all, plenty of the seafood comes from their own local company - Mooloolah River Fisheries - which also exports seafood all over the world.

But be warned, the fish market can get very busy in peak times - at school holidays and on weekends - but the wait is definitely worth it.
